Instructions for Preparing Confirmation Report

    After you have claimed a group and received verification from the instructor that someone else has not claimed the group ahead of you, your next task is to prepare a "Confirmation Report."

    The purpose of this report is:

    1. to insure the instructor that you have done exploration of your topic to assure the availability of resources to prepare a web page, and;

    2. to provide your instructor the opportunity to offer assistance; and

    3. to give you an opportunity to abort a particular project if it should turn out that there are inadequate materials.

    This is not a task to be done in an hour or two, but should engage you in a serious search for electronic and print resources.

    What to submit:

    Hand in a list of URLs and a print bibliography which demonstrate that you have located sufficient materials to permit you to proceed with the project.

    Submit materials in a manila folder with the name of the group written on the tab and your name and e-mail address on the outside of the folder.

    The contents of the folder should be organized in the following order:

    • a summary cover page (submit two copies) of the resources you have consulted organized in the following manner:

      1. URLs (including the name of the site) organized hierarchially from pages of greatest to lesser significance;

      2. Books and articles you have located on your topic that you believe will be helpful for your project. (If located in UVa library, include call #). List items alphabetically by author;

      3. Identify other electronic resources you have consulted or plan to consult. (If you are having difficulty finding print materials for your group, you will want to explore the alternative resources now and include a summary of your findings).

      I believe we have adequate resources for all the groups I have offered for your selection. For at least two or three groups, I know it will be necessary to rely on newspaper and non-mainstream press materials. It is essential that you verify the existence of these resources now rather than discover later that you don't have adequate materials to do a good page.

    • Print the front page of what you believe will be the most important web pages you will be utilizing, and organize hierarchially (as on your summary page). Use a yellow highlighter to identify the pages you have included in your summary of the most significant sites, and number the pages on the upper right hand corner so that I can keep them in order.

    • Include other pages from your web page searches that you anticipate you will be utilizing.

    • Include printout pages from your electronic bibliographic searches. These materials do not have to be in alphabetic order, but present it in a neat manner so that I can look through what you have done. Use a highlighter to indicate the items that appear in your summary cover page.

      Your materials will be returned with freeback as soon as possible -- hopefully I'll get through everyone's work in about a week.

      Remember you will be putting up a web page the following week, so I recommend that you create a hard copy or electronic file of your materials to use in preparation of your preliminary web page.
