Cult Group Controversies:
The Counter-Cult Movement

The Religious Movements Page is pleased to announce that Douglas
E. Cowan has agreed to join us as an Associate Editor with
responsibility for developing the Counter-Cult Movements
segment of this web site. Doug earned his Ph.D. from the University
of Calgary (1999) and is now an Assistant Professor of Sociology and
Religious Studies at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
Scholars have devoted considerable attention to understanding the
anti-cult movement, but there is no parallel investigation of the
counter-cult movement. Cowen's impressive dissertation immediately
establishes him as the leading scholar of this important evangelically
grounded movement. I recommend that you read his essay entitled
"From Parchment to Pixels: The Christian Countercult on the Internet"
which he presented at the 2001 International Conference of CESNUR at the
London School of Economics in April, 2001.
Cowan is developing his own web site called
countercult.com.
Most of the material on Cowan's site can also be found here, but the most
current materials will be on his site. For example, he is currently
working on biographical sketches of several of the leading figures in
the countercult movement as well as profiles of leading countercult sites.
