    I. Group Profile

    1. Name: Maitreya

    2. Founder: Benjamin Creme

    3. Date of Birth: 1922

    4. Birth Place: Glasgow, Scotland

    5. Year Founded: Creme states that he was first contacted by the Masters of Wisdom in 1959, when he was told that Maitreya would return in approximately twenty years, at which time Creme would be contacted. It was not until 1974, however, that information on Maitreya was made public by Creme. 1

    6. Sacred or Revered Texts: When giving speeches, Maitreya has been quoted as having used various texts from religions around the world, though he separates himself from them stating that he is of all religions and of none. Maitreya does not seek to divide the world further by pointing on a religion, but instead chooses to unite the world by showing the true way through the creation of a balance between human and nature. He uses quotes from religious texts, such as the Bible, in order to support his claims as the savior and expected leader for all religions. 2

    7. Cult or Sect: Negative sentiments are typically implied when the concepts "cult" and "sect" are employed in popular discourse. Since the Religious Movements Homepage seeks to promote religious tolerance and appreciation of the positive benefits of pluralism and religious diversity in human cultures, we encourage the use of alternative concepts that do not carry implicit negative stereotypes. For a more detailed discussion of both scholarly and popular usage of the concepts "cult" and "sect," please visit our Conceptualizing "Cult" and "Sect" page, where you will find additional links to related issues.

    8. Size of Group: The size of the group can not be properly defined due to the fact that it is not an organized group. The best count that can be made regarding the spread of Maitreya's followers is by the distribution of the magazine published by Benjamin Creme dedicated to spreading the news of Maitreya around the world. This magazine, SHARE International, is distributed to approximately 70 countries around the world. 3

    II. History

      There is said to exist a hierarchy of world leaders, leaders who supervise the happenings of this world from a superhuman level. Maitreya is at the head of this hierarchy, and has come down to share with the world, through the help of Benjamin Creme, his message of world peace. Maitreya has in mind a new world movement, one in which the worldwill be united as one, without religious boundaries. Creme announced Maitreya's coming as a World Teacher, as the one chosen from the Masters above to be the Master of Masters and to guide the world in its quest for unity and peace. 4

      Prior to 1977, Maitreya is said to have lived in the Himalayas. 5 Then, in July of 1977, he moved to the "Indian-Pakistani community of London" 6 where he lived as an "ordinary man" 7 . The moment in which Maitreya decided to come out to the world as its teacher was based on, according to the SHARE international magazine, various factors such as "humanity's response to his energies and the need for humanity...to invite him forward, so that [humanity's] free will [was] not infringed [upon]" 8 . It was not until March of 1978, however, that Maitreya emerged within his own community as a teacher, during which time he proceeded in pointing out "the world's most critical problems" 9 .

      In May of 1982 Benjamin Creme revealed at a Los Angeles press conferencethat Maitreya was living in London and proceeded to extend a media invitation to investigate Maitreya 10 . Creme himself stated that "in the coming three or four months, Maitreya [would] be working intensively to bring about a breakthrough in international relationships in the world." 11 Amazingly enough, it was not much later that the United States and what was at the time the USSR came to an armaments agreement that had been thought impossible 12 . In 1988, according to SHARE International and Benjamin Creme, Maitreya began to appear in the dreams of people and in person to several leaders from countries around the world. Also according to Creme, "manifestations of crosses of light in the windows of people's homes [were] reported in the US media and seen by many thousands" 13 .

      A "miraculous" appearance is said to have taken place in Kenya by Maitreya on June 11, 1988 14 . It is from this location that the sole photograph of him is believed to exist. He "address[ed] thousands of people in their own language, who instantly recogniz[ed] him as the Christ" 15 .

      Following is a list of other events that have been said to have been predicted by Maitreya, as listed on the SHARE international website 16 :

      1. release of Nelson Mandela in 1990;
      2. process of détente in South Africa;
      3. "goverments would give way to the 'voice of the people,' which found proof in Eastern Europe";
      4. cease-fire between Iran and Iraq;
      5. global rapprochement between guerrilla forces and national governments;
      6. internal problems of the Soviet Union;
      7. establishment of peace in Lebanon;
      8. election of a Democrat as US President, and;
      9. positive development in relations between Israel and the Palestinians.
      10. 17

      Maitreya is also foreseeing a major international stock market crash, which is said to begin in Japan sometime in the near future. He predicted this in 1988. 18

      Beginning in 1991, Maitreya has been making appearances all over the world, where he "magnetizes water in the vicinity before his appearance" 19 . There are "healing wells" in "Tlacote (Mexico), Nordenau (Germany) and Nadana (India)" headed by Maitreya which continue to "attract a growing number of visitors" 20 . These supposed miracles are quite powerful for those who witness them, and often serve to strengthen, if not create, one's belief in Maitreya and his mission. This mission, according to SHARE International, is "to create a climate of hope and expectancy into which he can emerge as the Teacherfor all humanity" 21 . Maitreya is claimed to hold so much hope and promise that he is almost too much to resist.

    III. Beliefs

      The word Maitreya means Lord of Love 22 , yet Maitreya is often referred to in a variety of other names, as well. Among these, he has been called the "Master of all Masters" and the "World Teacher" 23 . He is believed by his followers to be the anticipated savior and healer of the world, frequently described as the Messiah of the Jews, the Christ of the Christians, the Imam Mahdi of the Muslims, the Krishna of the Hindus, and the Buddha of the Buddhists 24 . Maitreya is said to have come down "from his mountainous realm in the Himalayas to live in London" 25 in "a physical body" 26 that Maitreya himself "created" 27 . He can, however, "...appear in the sex, colour and age of his whim" 28

      Maitreya was chosen as the one to carry out this duty because of his status at the head of a team of beings, called the Hierarchy of Masters of Wisdom, which rule humanity's revolutions 29 . As the head of this hierarchy, Maitreya is the anticipated "World Teacher" 30 .

      There are certain goals that have been established by Maitreya for his followers, as well as for the world as a whole, though he states that only those who believe in him shall see him. During the span of his time within this world, he has made it fairly clear that not only will his beliefs and plans come to light, but they will be carried out in a specific manner, finally coming together in the Day of Declaration. Maitreya is said to have stated that what he is trying to accomplish is not the foundation of a new religion, but the establishment of a period of Self-Realization. 31

      Maitreya proclaims to be the true divine master, with disciples such as Jesus having been sent by him earlier in his reign as head Master. 32 . However, because of his feelings that the world has reached a point where it is ready to unite across religions and non-religions alike, Maitreya decided that it was time that he himself visit the world.

      Maitreya has certain ideas as to why the world is the way it is, how it should actually work, and how people should lead their daily lives in conjunction with the planet, all in order for improvement to occur. In his view, the world today is going through a period of economical, social, and poitical stress 33 . His coming to the world will relieve this stress and lead to an united world, with all the religions and nonreligions gathering together as one, making the world whole. Maitreya believes that people need to put the environment first in order to create a balance in nature, for it is this lack of balance that accounts for all the depression, hunger, crime and other evils in this world (Energy of Equilibrium) 34 . If one identifies with the self alone, instead of relying on the commercialization that has, according to Maitreya, caused havoc in the world by leading people to focus solely on the material objects of the world, then equilibrium would be more easily achieved. 35

    IV. Issues and Controversies

      There are various claims as to who Maitreya really is. Some have speculated that he could possibly be the Anti-Christ, the one that is said to come before the true Lord returns to the earth, and who will turn all away from Him. 36 Others believe that Maitreya truly is the new-come lord of the world, the World Teacher, the one that was prophesized to come and save the human race from an unjust world. 37 This topic is in and of itself highly debatable, as it requires the interpretation of scripture from the Holy Bible along with the personal interpretation that comes from one's own beliefs. It is quite easy for one to state that Maitreya is indeed the anti- christ, yet it is just as simple for one to state the exact opposite. This appears to be a matter of personal opinion and understanding of the occurances surrounding Maitreya's existence.

      Maitreya's main moment will come on the much awaited "Day of Declaration" 38 when he will "reveal himself by means of global television and teach the building of a new civilization for the mutual benefit of all." 39 Described below are the actual expected occurances of this Day of Declaration as viewed by Creme's SHARE International magazine.

        "On this Day of Declaration, we will see his face on the television screen wherever we have access. The biblical statement, "All eyes will see him," will be fulfilled, in the only way in which it can be fulfilled. We will see his face, but he will not speak. His thoughts, his ideas, his call to humanity for justice, sharing, right relationships and peace, will take place silently, telepathically. Each of us will hear him inwardly in our own language. In this way, he will re-enact on a worldwide scale the true happenings of Pentecost 2,000 years ago." 40

      The whole faith that one can have in Maitreya rests in his one day making a recognized appearance of some sort. He has actually discussed through Creme his emergence and basically outlined how it is that he will come, with what expectations and with what sort of provocation. Creme states that "Without disturbing anyone, [he] will choose [his] moment" and that "[he has] not come to create followers...you should continue to develop within your own religions...and you will experience the Master." 41

      There are those who seem to have developed a profound attachment to Maitreya and the "Divine Plan" 42 that he is attempting to spread throughout the world by means of Benjamin Creme. These followers are filled with hope at the idea that Maitreya presents of a unified world, and are therefore, as with other religions, willing to do what it takes in order to reach Maitreya. Yet he claims that he can not be found, that when the time comes he will make himself available, speaking to the world through television broadcasts, addressing each nation in their own language, allowing individuals to hear him within their own heads if they be willing to do so. In his own words, "those who search for signs will find them." 43

      Newspapers and journals frequently discuss the coming of the antichrist along with the coming of Maitreya, with some associating the two while others offer a complete separation. However, due to the various times in which Maitreya failed to make the public appearances conveyed to the world by Creme, articles tend to mock Maitreyas comings.

      In 1984 several newspapers, among which were the Telegraph and the Observer, gathered at the New Clifton Bengali Restaurant in East London after being assured that they would be compensated by a visit by Maitreya. 44 Maitreya failed to make an appearance, once more initiating newspaper comments such as "Once again, I am afraid God did not show." 45 One personal website review entitled "The Internet's All-Purpose Saviour" similarly comments on Maitreya's supposed coming, describing him in ways that challenge his credibility: "Basically, this man goes by the name of Maitreya, says he's your all- purpose Saviour of the World...a group of wise teachers is coming to the Earth to help us humans solve our serious problems, so the cyber story goes." 46 In regards to Maitreya's views on the changes the world should make, specifically the environmental ones, this article finds it to be "...a bit off-base." 47

      As the validity of Maitreya is often put into question, the same should be done for Benjamin Creme , the recipient of the apparitions and messages from the World Teacher. The question of whether Benjamin Creme actually receives to this day, or ever received, visions and messages from Maitreya is debatable on a fairly large scale. What works against Creme is that he appears to be the only one getting visions of Maitreya. In 1972, under Maitreya's orders, Creme began his training in preparation for Maitreya's coming. 48 According to him, he had been chosen to reveal the Teacher to the world. But how was he to prove it. As evidence Creme normally uses the so-called miracles that Maitreya is said to have predicted. The miracles, as stated in the SHARE International website by Creme himself, are not truly miracles but simply "...laws of nature we, as yet, do not know." 49 Through the wide distribution of Creme's newspaper across the world it can be noted that there are many believers out there. Yet the coming of Maitreya is still a mystery and in large part unsupported. There are some who feel that the evidence provided by Creme is not enough to even validate his being communicated to, much less the actual existence of Maitreya.

      The extent of the depth put into Maitreya's coming as a world leader can be observed in the following quote.

      "To be reborn in the presence of Maitreya, the future Buddha, is the greatest wish of many Tibetans and Mongols, and the inscription "Come, Maitreya, come!" on the rocks of numerous mountains testifies to their longing."
