1) Open up your NRM
Profile in whichever application you have until now been working on
it (for most of you, this application will be Microsoft Word
97).
2) From the file menu, select the
"Save As" option.
3) At the bottom of the "Save As"
dialog box there is a pull-down menu called "Save as file of type:" -
from this menu, select type "Text Only."
4) Rename your file to differentiate
it from the version you're converting from. If you're converting in
Microsoft Word 97, do not add a suffix to your filename. The suffix
is the 3-character extension after the main filename in the form
<filename>.<suffix> (e.g. suma.doc or suma.htm).
5) Save the file as type "Text Only"
onto your floppy disk (A: drive) or the hard drive Temp directory
(C:\temp) and exit the program.
6) Click and hold the "Start" button
in the bottom lefthand corner of the Windows 95/Windows NT Desktop.
Move your mouse to the "Programs" option. From the submenu that
appears to the right, move your mouse up to the "Accessories" menu
option. A new submenu will appear - select "WordPad" from the bottom
of the "Accessories" folder.
7) WordPad will load. When the
program has opened, go to the "File" menu and select the "Open"
option. When the "Open" dialog box appears, go the "Open file of
type" pulldown menu and select files of type "All."
8) Next, locate the directory in
which you've saved the text-converted copy of your NRM Profile page.
If you've saved the converted file to your floppy disk, select the A:
drive. If you've saved your file to the hard drive Temp directory,
navigate to this directory on the C: drive.
9) Open up your file in WordPad. You
can now edit your profile page as you wish. When you save your file
in WordPad, save it as file of type Text Only. If you fail to do this
your file will be saved as an MS Word 6.0 document (a format which is
unreadable by web browsers). Further, make sure that you append a
.html suffix to your file (e.g.
mormons.html - failure to do this will also result in a
file which is not read correctly by a Web browser).
1) While you edit your
profile page in WordPad, you should monitor your progress in
Netscape. This strategy will allow you to correct any errors as they
occur, rather than down the line when they may be more difficult to
diagnose and fix. Save your file in WordPad (but leave the WordPad
application open).
2) Open Netscape Navigator. From the
"File" menu, select the "Open File" option. From the dialog box which
appears, select your profile page HTML file and hit "Open."
3) The HTML page which appears on
the screen is your profile page as currently saved to disk. Note that
you can - and should - periodically re-save your profile in WordPad
and view your progress in the Netscape browser window. When you've
re-saved the page in WordPad (as type "Text" and with a .html
suffix), press the "Reload"
button on the browser command bar to see your progress.
